 Utagawa Hiroshige

1797 Edo (Tokio) – 1858 ebenda

Japanischer Zeichner und Meister des Farbholzschnitts. Ab 1809 hatte Hiroshige zunächst das Amt des Feuerwehroffiziers inne, das ihm von seinem Vater übergeben worden war. Neben dieser Arbeit nahm er eine Lehre als Farbholzschnittzeichner auf und erhielt Malunterricht bei Rinsai. Ab 1810 oder 1811 begann er eine Ausbildung bei dem Holzschnittzeichner Utagawa Toyohiro (ca. 1763–1828). Zunächst entstanden Buchillustrationen, Kabuki-Drucke ("Yakusha-e"), Bilder schöner Frauen ("Bijin-ga") sowie Darstellungen historischer Begebenheiten ("Musha-e"). Um 1832 entstand seine erste Serie "Berühmte Ansichten der Oststraße", die großen Publikumsanklang fand. Daraufhin erhielt Hiroshige den bedeutenden Auftrag der Produktion der Serie "55 Stationen der Tokai-Straße" und im Folgejahr "53 Stationen des Tokaido", welche als Sammelalben verlegt wurden. Als nunmehr anerkannter Künstler, erhielt er bis zu seinem Tod zahlreiche Aufträge für die Gestaltung von Farbholzschnitten und -serien. Auf dem Höhepunkt seines Schaffens entstand in seinen zwei letzten Lebensjahren die Serie "100 Berühmte Ansichten von Edo". Maßgeblichen Einfluss übte Hiroshige auf die europäische Kunst im 19. Jahrhundert aus und inspirierte Künstler wie bspw. Vincent van Gogh.

Designed by Baisotei Gengyo (1817–80). The second version of the content page, including the provinces Buzen and Bungo in the cartouche of the Saikaido route.

Album with clear abrasion and with losses of the printing colour, also slightly stained. Overall creases and traces from handling, slightly wavy, corners worn off.
