Johann Wilhelm Schirmer
1807 Jülich – 1863 Karlsruhe
Bedeutender deutscher Landschaftsmaler. Ab 1825 Studium an der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie. Seit 1831 Lehrtätigkeit an der Akademie, ab 1839 Ernennung zum ordentlichen Professor. Gründungsdirektor der 1855 etablierten großherzoglichen Kunstschule in Karlsruhe. "Zahlreiche Reisen führten Schirmer u.a. in die Eifel, die Normandie, die Schweizer Alpen und nach Italien. Schirmer erweist sich hier als ein großartiger Zeichner, der in täglichen Skizzen vor der Natur spontane Eindrücke, Details und übergreifende Formen festhielt."

Watercolour. and pencil on structured "Canson" paper with cut watermark. Verso signed with pencil "J.W. Schirmer". Illegibly inscribed and dated (?) "Fc…" on the bottom right and left.
Provenance: privately owned in Dresden; formerly estate of Richard Wagner, Dresden, Owner of the "Kunsthandlung Richter", Prager Straße in Dresden until the bombing in 1945.
