Benvenuto Cellini

Cellinis Popularität geht vor allem auf die 1803 von Goethe übersetzte Autobiographie zurück. Er arbeitete als Goldschmied und Bildhauer für die Päpste in Rom, die Medici in Florenz und König Franz I. in Fontainebleau. Von den Goldschmiedearbeiten ist außer dem Salzfaß für Franz I. (Wien) fast nichts erhalten. Sein Bronzestandbild des Perseus in der "Loggia dei Lanzi" in Florenz (1545–54) gehört zu den Hauptwerken des Manierismus.

Bronze, cast, blackbrown patina. Cast in three pieces. After the original by B. Cellini, loggia dei Lanzi, Florence.
Head of Medusa missing. Right arm of the Medusa secured by restoration. Sword of Perseus slightly loose. Inside partially copper rust. Corners and edges of the marble base minimally knocked. Joint of the threefold installation with two diagonal brads on top and bottom of the middle piece. Two brads broken.
The quality of the cast is very good, still a clear dating is difficult to determine.
Haupt der Medusa fehlt. Mit einem restauratorisch gesicherten Abbruch des rechten Arms der Medusa. Schwert des Perseus etwas gelockert. Hauptfiguren innenliegend mit Grünspan. Die Eck- und Kantbereiche des Marmorsockels leicht bestoßen. Verbindung des dreiteiligen Aufbaus mit zwei diagonalen Stiften an der Ober- und Unterseite des Mittelstücks, davon jeweils einer abgebrochen.
H. ca. 131 cm (mit Sockel).
