Pietro Antonio Rotari
1707 Verona – 1762 Sankt Petersburg
Als Sohn einer adligen Familie studierte Rotari Malerei zunächst nur als Zeitvertreib. Auf Wunsch seines Lehrers Antonio Balesta verfolgte er die Malerei ernsthafter weiter, lernte bei ihm bis 1725 und ging dann nach Venedig, um Werke von Tizian und Veronese zu kopieren. Nach Stationen in Rom und Neapel ging er zurück nach Verona, wo er ein eigenes Studio gründete und durch seine religiösen Werke hervortrat. Um 1751 ging er über Wien nach Dresden, wo er ein begehrter Portraitmaler am Hof August III. war. 1756 ging er nach Sankt Petersburg, um seine äußerst erfolgreiche Portraitkunst am Hof der Zaren zu vervollkommnen.
